Common Depression & Trauma Symptoms

Depression may commonly present physically through:

  • digestive issues

  • exhaustion and fatigue

  • headaches

  • excessive weight gain or weight loss

  • excessive and/or decrease in sleep patterns or early morning waking

  • chronic pain

Emotionally present with feelings of:

  • apathy/ feeling “empty”

  • loss of interest in pleasure

  • hopelessness

  • sad, anxious or unable to describe how you feel

  • guilt

  • feel worthlessness

  • irritability or angry

  • crying

Socially present with:

  • Isolating from friends and family members

Cognitively present with:

  • difficulty concentrating or making decisions

  • decreased productivity.  

Symptoms of Trauma

  • Feeling agitated and irritable

  • Hypervigilant

  • Isolation and loneliness

  • Fearful and anxious

  • Mistrusting

  • Loss of pleasure in activities

  • Feelings of guilt

  • Sleep issues such as insomnia & nightmares

  • Unwanted thoughts

  • Difficulties focusing—feel you are in a fog

  • Panic feels just above the surface

Depression is diagnosed more frequently in women with even higher rates of depression in late fall and winter months. Some women can also experience depression after giving birth. Depression can often be exacerbated by anxiety. Drinking alcohol, taking drugs and/or overeatting as a way of unhealthy coping may cause anxiety and depression to increase and result in other possible medical problems.
